Historical information

The trumeau is in the style of the Louis XVI period, with a base with drawers and flap and a riser with two blind doors that conceal secret compartments, drawers and small drawers inside, including a central sliding top that hides a small compartment.

The upper hinges are exposed gold-plated brass. The decreasing height of the drawers in the base evokes the traditional Dutch design; while the shape of the gilded handle plate is in the English tradition.

These elements point to a Nordic provenance, presumably from the Netherlands, but possibly also from Dutch or German Friesland, given that in the early 19th century, styles from “taste centres” such as England or the Netherlands circulated throughout Europe.
