This winged cherub, together with two other fragments, one of which is kept at the Goriškj Muzej, is all that remains of a large altarpiece depicting the Assumption of the Virgin by the Gorizia-born painter Francesco Caucig (1755-1828).
During the First World War, the painting, which at the time was located in the chapel of the Kromberk castle owned by the Coronini family, was saved by Austrian troops from the fire that completely destroyed the building in November 1915, but was severely damaged as it was not rolled up properly.
Francesco Caucig, considerato uno dei più importanti pittori austriaci dell’epoca neoclassica nacque a Gorizia nel 1755. Fu grazie all’interessamento e alla protezione dei nobili Cobenzl, prima Guidobaldo e poi suoi figlio Giovanni Filippo, che il giovane artista poté compiere la propria formazione a Vienna e a Roma, imponendosi poi con le sue opere di soggetto classico e mitologico che gli valsero la nomina di professore all’Accademia della capitale asburgica. La pala dell’Assunta eseguita, come altri due dipinti raffiguranti la Visitazione e la Fuga in Egitto per la cappella della residenza viennese di Giovanni Filippo Cobenzl, nel 1810 furono ereditati da Michele Coronini Cronberg.
