The scenic centrepiece, made by the Garrand company of London, one of the main suppliers of silverware and jewellery to the British royal house at the time of Queen Victoria, is part of a production of important sculptural pieces, intended to become the trophy for a competition or a presentation silver, an exclusive object to be given as a gift on special occasions.
As documents in the Coronini Cronberg Historical Archive confirm, this is in fact one of the prizes won in Egypt by the stable of brothers George and Fred Smart, inherited in 1912 by Nicoletta Coronini Cronberg.
L’ambientazione secentesca della scena e la cura riservata alla resa dei dettagli lasciano sospettare che la scena dipenda da qualche modello figurativo più antico, come una stampa o un dipinto, forse da mettere in rapporto con la nota passione della famiglia reale degli Stuart per la pratica della falconeria. Il personaggio raffigurato potrebbe infatti essere Giacomo I Stuart che promosse largamente la Falconeria Reale, intrattenne la corte ed i suoi ospiti stranieri con battute di caccia con i falconi e profuse denari e risorse nella ricerca di pregiati rapaci.
