Rear Courtyard

Very little is known about the layout and transformations this area has undergone over time. Characterised by a picturesque view of the riverbed of the Corno stream flowing a little further down, during the 18th century it was connected to the neighbourhood of Piazzutta below by a series of steps, which were accessed from a gateway overlooking what is still called Via della Scala.

Falling into disuse towards the end of the 19th century after the opening of the central avenue, and damaged during the First World War, the steps were later buried and the entrance walled up.

The construction of the mixtilinear basin used as a swimming pool, as well as the double staircase above it, dates back to the time of the German occupation. After Count Guglielmo's death, on the initiative of Luciano Viatori, who oversaw the maintenance of the park for years, the courtyard was laid out as an Italian-style garden with regular rows of box and rose bushes.

In order to allow the area, which was previously closed to the public, to be used again, recent work not only restored the steps and the entrance on Via della Scala, but also closed the swimming pool, which is used to collect rainwater.
