Pergola and Belvedere

The area facing the public road is characterised by some of the park's most outstanding architectural features. The beautiful structure of the belvedere, a raised circular terrace reached by a flight of steps and bordered by a stone balustrade, was originally designed to offer a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and the city.

Next to the base, covered by large boulders transported from the nearby Karst, there is a small pond, the result of excavations for the raising of the building, into which the statue of Narcissus by the Venetian sculptor Orazio Marinali is reflected.

The belvedere staircase is connected to the remains of the original boundary wall, to which a stone wall with alcoves has been attached, housing other statues by Marinali: Venus, Paris and possibly Adonis. From this point, a path continues to a pergola made of stone pillars that once supported a wooden beam structure on which ancient rose bushes climbed.

In one direction, the pergola leads to a scenic staircase that descends to the access avenue and the main entrance to the park; in the other, it leads back to the large lawn, passing through the old iron gate that once led to the surrounding countryside.

The large vases with yucca plants that Count Alfredo used to display every year with the arrival of spring, as can be seen on a number of vintage postcards, have been relocated along the steps.
