Origin and Distribution

Teucrium chamaedrys is native to Southern and Central Europe, the Mediterranean regions, and the Caucasus. It is widespread in many temperate countries, growing in rocky environments, dry woodlands, and arid meadows.

Description

Teucrium chamaedrys is a small evergreen shrub that can reach a height of 20-30 cm. It has a bushy growth habit with woody stems at the base and erect or ascending branches. The leaves are opposite, oval or oblong, with deeply serrated margins and a dark green color. The leaves have a rough texture and a leathery consistency.

Flowers and Fruits

Flowering occurs in summer, usually from June to September. The flowers are pink or purple, sometimes white, and are gathered in terminal or axillary spike-like inflorescences. Each flower is bilabiate, with the upper lip divided into two lobes and the lower lip trilobed. The fruit consists of small achenes containing the seeds.

Habitat

Teucrium chamaedrys prefers well-drained, calcareous, or rocky soils, and can thrive in poor, arid soils. It grows well in full sun or partial shade and is drought-resistant, tolerating coastal exposure. It is often found in natural environments such as dry meadows, rocky slopes, and woodland edges.

Special Notes

Teucrium chamaedrys is valued for its ornamental appeal and medicinal properties. It is often used as an edging plant, in rock gardens, or to create small hedges. Its aromatic leaves have been historically used in herbal medicine to treat digestive issues, fevers, and inflammations, although internal use has been restricted due to potential liver toxicity. Extracts from the plant are also used in cosmetics for their astringent and toning properties. Teucrium chamaedrys is a melliferous plant, attracting bees and other pollinators, thus contributing to garden biodiversity. Its ability to thrive in difficult conditions makes it an excellent choice for low-maintenance gardens and xeriscaping.
